London & Lilongwe, April 2023: AfricArxiv and PeerRef have agreed to work together to promote and coordinate open peer review of preprint manuscripts authored by African scholars.

Researchers who have shared their article manuscripts on any preprint server, general, or institutional repository platforms are encouraged to inquire for peer review via PeerRef.

Starting immediately, PeerRef will organise peer review for incoming inquiries for research manuscripts by identifying expert referees of relevant research fields and applied methodologies.

The review reports receive a digital object identifier (DOI) and will be published with a link to the preprint manuscript on the PeerRef platform: https://peerrefplatform.com/. Review reports will be tagged with “africarxiv” to make African scholarly record contributions searchable for the African region.

Workflow

Authors will then have the option to leave their peer-reviewed manuscript as the final record to describe their research findings or submit their preprint and review reports to a journal of their choice. PeerRef’s partner journals have already agreed to use PeerRef’s reviewer reports in publication decisions.

To identify a suitable journal to publish your work in, we recommend AJOL and DOAJ while following the Think. Check. Submit. guideline for journal selection.

Keletso Masisi, project manager at AfricArXiv says;

“AfricArxiv is working with scholarly publishing and research dissemination platforms including OSF, PubPub, Qeios, Zenodo, Figshare, and ScienceOpen. For us, this partnership with PeerRef is a logical next step in providing advanced services toward establishing open publishing workflows on the continent. In doing so, we are building on previous initiatives for peer review in and for Africa, especially the recent collaboration ‘Open Peer Reviewers in Africa’ during which we planned and facilitated a Train the Trainer program on Open Peer Review together with TCC Africa, Eider Africa, eLife: https://africarxiv.pubpub.org/open-peer-reviewers-in-africa
We are excited to herewith formalise a workflow by collaborating with PeerRef and hope we will soon be serving African journal editorial boards as well as researchers with this service.”

Elliott Lumb, Founder and CEO at PeerRef adds:

“At PeerRef we aim to provide journal-independent open peer review for all researchers. Engaging with researchers from diverse backgrounds is crucial to achieving this goal. By working with African researchers, we will gain a deeper understanding of how PeerRef can support them. We are excited to collaborate with AfricArxiv to raise awareness about journal-independent peer review among the African research community.”

About the Partners

PeerRef

PeerRef is a journal-independent open peer review platform. It helps researchers verify and improve research by organising peer review of preprints and publishing peer review reports. It also enables journal editors to make rapid publication decisions based on PeerRef’s reviews.

PeerRef launched in 2021. Its goals are to make peer review open, provide researchers with greater choice in how their research is shared and evaluated, and eliminate the need for repeated peer review in successive journals.

AfricArXiv

AfricArXiv is a community-led digital archive for African research, working towards building an African-owned scholarly portal; a knowledge commons of African scholarly works. We partner with scholarly stakeholders from within and outside Africa to establish a scholarly discoverability and publishing platform that primarily serves African scholarly stakeholders, such as researchers, research institutions, libraries, publishers, and policymakers, while at the same time informing the global scholarly community by fostering collaboration and knowledge exchange.
