In memoriam of Florence Piron

Florence Piron was an anthropologist and ethicist, working as a professor in the Department of Information and Communication at Laval University in Quebec, Canada. As a strong advocate for Open Access, she taught critical thinking through multidisciplinary courses on ethics, democracy and living together and was passionately investigating the links between the university, society and culture (ethics), both as a researcher and as an activist for a more open, more inclusive, socially responsible science that is oriented towards the common good. 

Since 2010, she has been at the heart of several research-action projects aiming to enhance and disseminate open access university knowledge in French-speaking sub-Saharan Africa and Haiti and to develop endogenous research capacity in these regions. The SOHA project (2015-2017) focused on open science as a tool for cognitive justice and empowerment in Haiti and Africa, enabling collaboration between dozens of students, doctoral students and professors from all over Africa and Haiti. The resulting network has made it possible to conduct a major participatory survey on cognitive injustices in African and Haitian universities, to create DICAMES (CAMES digital archive), to create the ScienceAfrique research support platform, to launch the Grenier des savoirs, a collection of pan-African multidisciplinary journals, and to support the creation of a dozen science and knowledge boutiques in Africa and Haiti.
