AfricArXiv amongst the first grantees of the ORCID Global Participation Fund

Lilongwe and Nairobi, Jan 26, 2023

We are excited to share that AfricArXiv is amongst the six awardees of the Global Participation Fund. The other grantees are Eko-Konnect Research and Education Initiative (Nigeria), Kenya Libraries and Information Services Consortium, The Université Virtuelle De Côte D’Ivoire, and Technische Universität Hamburg (Germany).

We will be working closely with our partners and the other grantees to establish ORCID-facilitated multi-stakeholder consortia for efficient scholarly knowledge sharing from Africa. To accomplish that, we will source from our experience and close cooperation with our affiliated generalist scholarly repository systems, namely OSF, Figshare, ScienceOpen, PubPub, Qeios, and Zenodo, to explore technical features and opportunities to integrate and promote ORCID, ROR, and other persistent identifiers that allow for best possible discoverability and indexing in open scholarly databases such as The Lens, BASEsearch, a.o.

Our goal is to thereby facilitate African institutional reputation building, complementing the existing institutional infrastructure in various African countries and institutions.

To achieve our goal, we are partnering with UbuntuNet Alliance for Research and Education Networking, which shall serve as the fiscal host for the project and provide technical support. The member National Research and Education Networks within the Alliance will be invited to participate in stocktaking and capacity-building activities, which will be further facilitated by our partner organisation, TCC Africa.

“Our partnership with AfricArXiv is in line with our strategy to carry out activities and support projects that shall have a significant impact in promoting open science in Africa” notes Prof Madara Ogot, CEO of the Alliance.

Joy Owango, the director at TCC Africa adds: “We are very excited to see these developments. AfricArXiv activities are critical to increasing the visibility of African research, which aligns with TCC Africa's strategy, and we look forward to working with them to promote Open Science in Africa.
