CABI Agriculture and Bioscience partners up with Training Centre in Communication partners to provide training and mentorship for Early Career Journal Editors
CABI Agriculture & Bioscience and Training Centre in Communication (TCC Africa) teamed up to provide training and mentorship for early career researchers. The programme was designed to provide new editors with the skills and knowledge for future editorial board roles.
The trainings were conducted through live, interactive online workshops as follows:
Wednesday 22 March 12:00 UTC
This workshop aimed to establish a comprehensive understanding of the best practices and standards for journals. Erika Newton from CABI guided the participants through an exploration of various types of journals, editorial workflows, editorial policies, and publishing ethics.
Wednesday 29 March 12:00 UTC
In the second workshop, Joy Owango from TCC Africa, guided the participants through Scientometrics and Persistent Identifiers (PID’s) and their significance to the publishing process. She explained how Scientometrics can be used to measure the impact and relevance of scholarly publications, and how PIDs such as Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) ensure the traceability and accessibility of scholarly works over time.
The aim of this workshop was to ensure that the participants would have a better understanding of the significance of these in evaluating the quality and impact of scholarly works.
Wednesday 5 April 12:00 UTC
The last workshop focused on the peer-review process, which is a critical step in ensuring the quality and validity of research work before publication. TCC Africa’s Joy Owango and Nicholas Outa led the discussions and provided insights into the peer-review process and the importance of addressing bias to ensure the quality and diversity of research work. The participants gained a better understanding of the peer-review process and the potential biases that can affect it, as well as practical strategies to promote fairness and inclusivity in peer review.
